    <body>September 15, 2008, the students and alumni of St. John Catholic School celebrated the school&#8217;s Fiftieth Birthday with a lively party, a ground breaking for the school&#8217;s new gym, and living out the Christian values the school holds dear by giving to the less fortunate of the community. At the party, students collected &#8220;birthday gifts&#8221; of toys, diapers and other baby items, as well as food and donated the gifts to Catholic Charities to be distributed to those in need.
Thanks to the generosity of the students (past and present) of St. John Catholic School, gifts totaling approximately $2,000 have significantly helped replenish our resources.

    <body>Cheryl Bowie, founder (in 2007) and president of the non-profit ministry Relax, Release, Renew, Inc contacted Panama City Catholic Charities in late August with a generous invitation to the women residing in the St. Barnabas Transitional Shelter. The organization, made up of a group of multi-talented ladies living in various parts of the country, was convening on Panama City Beach October 3-5 for their Third Annual Retreat. In addition to the goals of the organization, and specific to this retreat- to find &#8220;solitude and revitalization, cool ocean breezes&#8221; and holding beachfront devotionals away from their (often) hectic lives- the members also wanted to make a contribution to the &#8220;host community&#8221; and they chose the St. Barnabas House (SBH) as the recipient of their good will. A collection of toiletries, clothing and linens were presented for the residents of SBH. Deb Walton, Program Coordinator of the shelter, along with the in-house manager Diane Langan were on hand Saturday night (Oct. 4) at the Majestic Beach Resort to accept these gifts.
The Relax, Release, Renew Retreat (RRR) involved much more that just R&amp;R. Diane, Tracy and her 8-month old daughter Rema, residents of SBH were extended an invitation to participate in the weekend activities that included guest speakers and workshops, focused on gaining tools that help enrich one&#8217;s &#8220;spiritual, physical, intellectual and emotional well being&#8221;. Tracy shared her experience by saying-&#8220;I immediately felt an inward peace, trust and a spiritual renewal when I entered the company of these women&#8230;it was very moving&#8221;. Thanks to all the wonderful ladies in RRR who allowed Catholic Charities to be an integral part of their Third Annual Retreat!

    <blurb>Alan Shawn Feinstein challenged communities across the nation to donate dollars and food items to their local food banks...</blurb>
    <body>The Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation will divide one million dollars among "hunger fighting agencies" who participated in this year's challenge to raise money and donations of food during March 1st - April 30th. Although the first time that Catholic Charities in Panama City participated, this is the _tenth_ straight year that Mr. Feinstein, who resides in Rhode Island, has made this generous offer.
The Panama City office took advantage of this timely event by promoting the "challenge" to local churches, businesses, social service organizations and individuals who reside in Bay and other neighboring counties. One family donated a mini-van to Catholic Charities to be used for collecting donated food to the agency. All in all, the response from mailings, announcements in church bulletins, emails, etc. resulted in monetary donations of $11,240 along with 6,712 food items and a van valued at $1,600. These donations came at a time when shelves in the Sheila Kreppein Food Pantry were quite bare; Emergency Food and Shelter Program dollars were close to exhausted (for the previous year), and it was still a few weeks prior to the Annual Postal Food Drive. Thanks to all of those who "rose to the challenge" and thanks to the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation for offering such a positive incentive to our communities in responding to the fight against hunger!</body>

    <blurb>Panama City's annual Postal Food Drive results in nearly 30,000 pounds of groceries for Catholic Charities' Sheila
Kreppein Food Pantry. </blurb>

Shelves in the Sheila Kreppein Food Pantry will soon be well-stocked with donations, due to a very generous response from the local community. On Saturday, May 12th, residents of Panama City placed non-perishable food items near their mailboxes for the postman to pick up. These donations were divided among the three Panama City agencies that provide food for those in need: Salvation Army, Rescue Mission and Catholic Charities. The total food collected weighed approximately 100,000 pounds.
Catholic Charities' volunteers Jim Fantaski and Paul Andrew made several trips with the agency truck to the Post Office to pick up boxes full of groceries (we need a bigger truck!), then unloaded it at the Regional office with the help of volunteer Phil Anthon and staff members Donna Perdue and Brandi Boyer. Joining this "brigade" were members of St. Dominic's Parish and individuals from Keeton House (located nearby). Thanks to all of those who generously gave their time (and muscle) on a +long+ Saturday, completing the delivery from the Post Office shortly before 10 p.m.
Catholic Charities is very grateful for the community's generosity and to the U.S. Post Office for sponsoring this tremendous annual event for giving. </body>

    <blurb>The Panama City Regional Office hosted the quarterly Diocesan Board Meeting on Saturday, May 11 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. </blurb>
    <body>                      !http://www.catholiccharitiesnwfl.org/downloads/Mark_and_members !
The entire staff of the Panama City Regional Office was on hand to _meet and greet_ Bishop John Ricard and other members of the Diocesan Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of NWFL. Several individuals who serve on the Panama City Regional Board were in attendance as well. Having the Diocesan Board "rotate" the location for their quarterly meetings provides a wonderful opportunity for both the Board members (Diocesan and Regional) and Regional staff to gain some face-to-face connection, camaraderie and education on the roles of all the individuals who make up our organization that stretches from Pensacola to Tallahassee.
After lunch, many of the Diocesan Board members made the most of their trip to Panama City by taking time to tour the newly renovated St. Barnabas House Transitional Shelter and the Regional Office. Tom and Nancy Weidenhamer made the short trip over to the Thrift Store Warehouse as well, before heading home.
This newly strengthened interaction between the Boards, along with the Panama City staff on Saturday, May 11, was evidence to carrying out the strategies set forth in the _Diocesan Board Summative Report from August 26_, developing more cohesion across the miles.

    <blurb>Thirteen hard-working Spring Breakers from Boston University paint rather than party during their vacation in Panama City.</blurb>
    <body>!&gt;/images/BostonUgroup.jpg!

The Catholic Charities Regional Office in Panama City received some much needed "sprucing up" thanks to several _Alternative_ Spring Breakers from Boston University. Catholic Charities was the first agency on their week-long list of non-profit organizations that benefited from the generosity of these community-minded young adults. With some assistance from local volunteers Jim Fantaski (affectionately called "The Colonel" by the students) and PC winter residents Barb and Bob Maleski, a couple of offices now have fresh paint. Additionally, the students sealed all of the linoleum flooring at the St. Barnabas Transitional Shelter and cleaned out a shed on the property. Thanks to the following for their labors of love:
Isis Madrid, Courtney Downing, Charles Howes, Elissa Hine, Mike Becchina, Rachel Pickens, Khushabu Kasabwala, Chris Appaneal, Marc Quintaralle, Ben Tuttle, Leslie del Angel and Alexander Ke.</body>

    <blurb>Through an ecumenical response from the Panama City community, the transitional shelter has received a much needed facelift. </blurb>
    <body>After the last 2006 residents of St. Barnabas House completed their stay and left the shelter in October, the Transitional Shelter Program was temporarily suspended in order to do some repairs, renovations and reburishing. New flooring was installed throughout the large 8-bedroom facility from a previous grant received from the Community Services Foundation. A simple request went out to local churches and organizations asking if they might want to "adopt a room" in the house, providing the paint, labor and other materials necessary to give each bedroom, bath or common area _new life_. Response was quickly received from several churches of various denominations, a Lion's Club group, and the Junior Leadership Bay.
St. Barnabas House officially reopened on March 5th and now offers a facility that is warm and inviting to families needing a place to call _home_ for several months while they save their resources, strengthen their life skills, and become more self-sufficient. Because of the generous donations of time, labor and supplies from these church and community groups, St. Barnabas House not only provides a safe and stable environment to these children and families, but also a warm and welcoming place to "hang their hats".
Catholic Charities wishes to thank the following for their generous and unselfish participation in this worthwhile project:
* Messiah Lutheran
* Highland Park Baptist
* Primitive Baptist
* First Presbyterian of Lynn Haven
* Parkway Lion's Club
* Junior Leadership Bay
Additionally thanks to these individuals for their time and expertise as well:
* Jim Fantaski (what a Gem!)
* Bob &amp; Barb Malaski (our expert landscaping "snowbirds")
* Ray Love (exterior painter)
A Grand Opening and Rededication is planned for May 24th from 1-3:30 p.m.
