SURVIVING IVAN
Displaced from his home in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan, like many others, “John” received minimal assistance with funding to fix his home. With the money he did recieve John began repairs, but did not have enough to finish after completing only the foundation and a small enclosed area for him to sleep.
With no walls, the home was exposed to various weather conditions and nature’s wildlife. Although, he managed to close off one small room, on extremely cold nights the client would have to find a friend or a relative to accomodate himself.
In hopes to obtain a mobile home from the BRACE organization, John enrolled and participated in Catholic Charities’ Mission Homeward Bound Program. Caseworkers offered him the support and guidance to complete the requirements and after hard work and determination, on April 11, 2008, John received his mobile home. Currently, he continues to work and save in hopes that steadily he will be able to finish his home.
